Man United midfielder Scott McTominay has been in terrific goalscoring form this season but he could leave in the summer.
It’s unusual for a football team to consider selling their second top scorer at the end of a season. Yet, Manchester United is contemplating selling Scott McTominay, who has netted nine goals this season.
At 27, McTominay is in the prime of his career, having nearly doubled his goal tally from the previous two seasons combined (five). His goals have been crucial, contributing to an additional 11 points in the league for United.
McTominay’s goals have come at key moments, including a double against Brentford in October for a 2-1 win, an equalizer against Sheffield United in the same month, two goals against Chelsea in December for another 2-1 victory, and goals against Wolves and Aston Villa. Without these goals, United would be 11 points poorer and sitting in 12th place, which could have led to the sacking of manager Erik ten Hag.
Interestingly, ten Hag, who was open to selling McTominay last summer, has now expressed his pleasure at having him in the squad. This change of heart is likely due to McTominay’s significant contributions.
During the international break, McTominay spoke about his evolving role in the squad, stating his willingness to adapt and play in different positions for the team’s benefit. He has shown resilience in the face of adversity, scoring important goals even when coming off the bench.

McTominay’s professionalism and mental preparedness to make an impact when needed have been commendable. Despite being out of favor in the dressing room, he has managed to fight his way back into the manager’s plans.
There’s a belief that a player like McTominay, with his training ethic and impact, would have always found a place in Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad. McTominay is most effective in an advanced midfield position, making late runs into the box reminiscent of Frank Lampard’s style of play.
Despite his limitations, particularly when played in a defensive midfield role, there is a case for retaining him in the squad next season. With Luton Town outscoring United this season, selling a player with nine goals seems unwise given the lack of other goal scorers in the squad.

McTominay’s goals have proven invaluable. While he might be one of the most marketable assets in the squad and his sale could ease Financial Fair Play (FFP) constraints, it seems counterproductive to sell a player capable of delivering in crucial moments. McTominay has proven to be an excellent squad player and should be retained for the upcoming summer.
